Rang de basanti Urban dhaba was on my wish list for a longtime. Finally I have got the time to visit this modern dhaba with a friend on a weekday for lunch. Located on a prime location like Hauz Khas, it surely pull up the crowd to get jam packed on a busy day. Not much of seating area on the floor, go early or book your seat to avoid waiting and standing outside on weekend. Nice ambience, wall decorated with colorfull bottles, tires, spoon and forks! It creates a colorfull funky urban dhaba feelings. some funny jokes thrown over the wall to create coolness.Attendants are courteous & gentle. They are well aware of the dishes they are serving and will happily explain you how it has been prepared and how is the taste.
Starting with the food - We were served sweet Chabeel as a welcome drink on arrival, which is made of roohafza and milk. Starters :- They gave us some of the house made chutneys and bhayankar masala to have it with foods. Stay away from tikhi chutney and bhayankar masala if you can't eat spicy food. Its hot ! Teekhi kukkad chat - Its a perfect snacks to have with drinks, just like chicken nachos it is a desi version. crushed panipuri crushed with pulled chickens, chopped green chilly and onion and spicy masala. I find similarity with CHURMUR, bongs will know this! Sawa futiya seekh - Humongous, giant sized mutton seekh kebab, perfectly grilled. Delicious and its their signature dish. This is a must one here. Burraahhh !!!! Tangri oye hoye - Chicken breast marinated perfectly and grilled medium done. Chicken could have been little more tender. Served with shot of spiced rum. It is actually not a spiced rum (read captain morgan etc.) . Instead they mixed indian spices like cardamom, cinnamon, raisins with rum to give you push to relish with the bite of tangri. Good innovation. Mahi Ambarsaria - Fish amritsari enuff said. always my savior to have it with a drink. Crispy fried sole fish fillet served with mint sauce and onion.
Drinks :- Nashila mango - Aam panna amalgamated with Vodka. Chai martini - Tea mixed with martini. Sweet in taste but will give you a kick Tamarind margarita - tamarind, tequila and lime juice used for this cocktail Main course :- Chuski Nully meat - Its a slow cooked Mutton shank curry with beaten curd/yoghurt, cardamom, cloves and cinnamon. Less spicy, mild gravy just like nihari. Ideal for those who doesn't like too much spicy Indian food. Bhayankar Keema Kaleji - Minced mutton (keema) and liver cooked combining together. We had these dishes with tandoori roti and hari mirch roti.
Desserts :- Halwa Basanti te gur de parantha - gajar ka halwa served with a parantha. Simply homemade taste but awesome irresistible taste. Smell of ghee, khoa and gajar in winter, ahhhh ! Bhayankar Meetha Paan - Vanilla ice cream topped with Paan suparis, liked it. Steller one. Overall verdict - 5/5, Recommended restaurant for a nice Indian lunch or dinner.
